The Crow Nation is fighting a Federal water compact which takes away private water rights in return for $460 million for tribal leaders to build a modern water system. There is a long history of corruption in Crow Tribal Leadership – embezzlement, cronyism, intimidation tactics. Many former Crow Chairman and officials are in prison. Former Crow Chairman Carl Venne, who made candidate Obama an honorary Crow, died in 2009 at the age of 62. During his reign the 1948 Treaty was eliminated and replaced in 2001 with a modern version replicating three branches of government.
This treaty changeover was done with an illegal vote maneuver from the secret ballot to a sudden rule change at the meeting in 2001 to a voice vote. Concerned Crow Tribal members have been fighting to get their voices heard since that tragic day and they feel that a NO vote on the Tribal Water Compact would do just that as the President of the US, Governor Schweitzer, Congressman Rehberg, Senators Baucus and Tester all support it.
